I simply love this! This was a brand identity and packaging for the furniture and housewares retailer. I love how the typography adds a quirky feel to the design and how it is arrange to visualize what is inside the packaging! As kids of the 80's we have fond memories of cassettes and created these limited edition badge sets as a reminder of this past format. There is currently 12 different cassette types by some of the mainstream tape manufacturers that we remember from the time. Each set consists of 6, 25mm button badges which are created as circular crops of the actual cassette artwork. These are attached to a printed cassette back board and sealed in a classic cassette box with a custom inlay card giving a brief history of the cassette format. The full range of cassette badge sets was exhibited as part of the ItsNiceThat 'Original Format' exhibition in the UK held in late 2008. They have also been featured in Web Designer Magazine and have been sold in limited editions all over the World.

After meeting up with my cousin i got my first live project from her. The brief was to design a logo for a French insipred Cocktail bar and tapas Joint.

This was information from the client to choose from one of the names below:

tableau [n. ta-BLOW or TA-blow] A tableau is a striking or artistic grouping of people or things in a picture or a dramatic scene. A presentation of a scene by a group of people who pose appropriately and remain silent and motionless is also called a tableau. In this case it is an abbreviation of the French tableau vivant (living picture).
Tableau traces back to the Latin tabula (a board or plank, hence a slab for writing on) but it entered English via the French. It has been in use in English since the late 17th century. Photographer Sandy Skoglund uses a tableau technique: http://www.kcad.edu/Gallery.finals/exhibitions/skoglund/skoglund.html.

bon vivant [n. BAWN vee-VAHN] A bon vivant is a person who is devoted to the finer things in life, especially good food and drink. Example: "She enjoyed visiting her uncle the bon vivant, who always provided fine wine and plenty of rich foods." Bon vivant is a French phrase combining bon (good or favorable) and vivant (living, healthy, animated). Vivant is the present participle of the French verb vivre (to live). Near synonyms include epicure and gourmand.

His coffee shop is located right outside Salford train station so he wanted something which was going to catch peoples atention as they ran to catch the train to their next meeting! Over the summer i also got the chance to meet up with my cousin, a freelance graphic designer in Leicester. She has recently set up her own company, five five design and it was really good having a chat with her! She showed me samples of her work and gave me some really good advice on how to tackle job situations after uni. She also said she was happy to pass me down any live briefs she got so i could have a crack at it to see what i can come up with which i think is a really good opportunity for me. This is the final point of sale display for the Nikon Camera Christmas offer. As you can see i changed the background to my original idea so it flowed better with the leaflet design. Im really happy with this and i cant believe i did something like this within a couple of days!

I prepared the images to apply on the concept boards to show the clients. This is something which i will be doing in future when preparing concept boards. I never use to add drop shows onto any of my work and now i realise that it makes such a difference to design why your trying to sell it to someone who has never seen it before.

So as i was designing my concept ideas for the Merlin Attraction offers, Gary designed a new concept idea for the Christmas promotion, as this is the one he decided to pitch across to the client, due to Christmas being the next big festival where it was more likey to be used. So..

I made my very first POS leaflet display this afternoon. I think its pretty good and works well..

Oh and also, i learnt how to make a brush in photoshop which i never knew!
1. Select the image you want with the rectangular marquee tool
2. Edit>Define Brush Preset...its as simple as that!

Day 3 at Grass Roots

I had so much fun today..i went over to the other building with a designer called Aaron on the digital production team. I helped him stage and photograph the Barcleys Marketing team, which were going to go on the companys website.

I also had the opportunity to sit on a briefing with this guy called Pat, he was absolutely crazy!!! But so full of energy!

He briefed Aaron about a web promotion BMW had coming up and pitched a few of his ideas across. Some of them were really good and they got my creative mind ticking aswell. The theme was based around 'Joy' and BMW's relationship between their customers and their product. The idea was to advertise an 'open weekend' promotion they are having which was basically having the opportunity to test drive one of their cars and win a holiday to Africa or Sweden. So therefore, working with two completely opposite countries with the hotness and the coldness and somehow combining them both together.

How to fold a DL size leaflet properly!

Gary took a bit of time out to show me how to produce mock ups to a professional level. I know this is a bit geeky but it is definitely going to help me in future.

1. Print out two seperate sides of the leaflet
2. Score the central croplines using the back of the scalpal
3. Cut off the edges in an 'L' shape on the opposite side of each leaflet
4. Cut roughly around the edge of the uncut page
5. Stick together the edges and press down firmly
6. Fold the leaflet together and cut off excess bleed marks
7. PERFECT! Nice folded leaflet

Ive been working at Grass roots for 2 days now and i love it! People are nice here and the place...well its an old barn house been converted to offices!

I have been working on a brief for the past 2 days now and ive finally finished it! Nikon cameras needed a leaflet designing to advertise their promotions if customers spent £100 or more on any Nikon Camera.

Their promotions included a free trip to Australia, a free photoprinter or free tickets to the merlin attractions.

The Australia and photoprinter ones were already done...i had the task of workin on the merlin attractions one!

Imagery relating to this topic were already found...so all i had to do was put something together which related to 'merlin attractions' and the process in what happens after you know you are entitled to a new camera!

I can't believe 2nd year is over! I have managed to a portfolio together which i was very happy with. I feel like i have kept consistency with my page layouts and tried not to add too much text onto the pages. I also think i have also added personality to my pages with the colour choices i have chosen. My passion for design for print is shown thoroughly throughout my folio and i feel my interest in corporate and logo design is shown clearly. I feel i have chosen appropriate pieces of work to show where i stand within the field of Graphic Design.

I wanted to keep the first pages of my portfolio focused and show people who are looking at it aware of what my key interests are. I really enjoy doing type and layout work which is something i want to carry on with in my 3rd year and i want to keep adding selective pieces of work to my portfolio as i progress.

Even though i have a passion for design for print i would like to spend more time in the screenprinitng and experiment with letterpress next year and really challenge myself as i really enjoyed the briefs which i did at the end of the year. With doing this and with trial and error i will have a variety of design work in my portfolio which will show employers i am capable of thinking outside the box rather than sticking to a printer and paper. I think this will definitely strengthen my portfolio.

I hope to keep my portfolio up to a professoional standard for the rest of my life as a designer and keep adding work to it as time goes by!

After a very long thurs night i made it!!!!!! I still can't believe i lost all my work thurs and i managed to do it!! Go me!

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module i have developed a few skills, time management and decision making become a vital part of it. The 3 briefs i chose were Nude, Type Factory and Postcard from the edge. When i was reading these throughout Easter i knew my key interests were in design for print and i wanted to apply my skills to them.

I would like to thank Lorenzo for my time management advice as originally i was going to spend a week on each brief but he told me to manage a all 3 at the same time so if i came acorss anything which influenced my work the knowledge and direction of the other projects wold always be on the back of my mind! SO thank you Lorenzo for that! Because of you i was able to design a logo for my mates new hair salon as well as tackle the 3 briefs.

My type factory brief was the most exciting for me. I think i started off with a rocky start as i was doing what i usually do and not making a decision. However after making my decision of having a focus for the project i was on a roll. I produced and identity for the type factory, booklet, sign design, t-shirts for staff and promotional, clothes tags, clothes tissue wrap and tissues!! I was well impressed that i made all these considering i was tackling 3 projects. Just shows what i am capable of!

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The Postcard brief was asking for a postcard from the edge. Therefore, the postcard needed to have a theme and look like it has come from that place. I did decide to produce a postcard to a blind person where i did a lot of first hand research around college with braille on the signs and also found braille on medicine boxes which i didn't notice before i started doing this project.

The nude brief was asking to increase brand awareness. As nude was a skincare product i looked at different existing skincare product leaflets and printed material to see how they had set their design out in order to sell their products.

The type factory was my favorite. I really enjoyed researching into different aspects of design and seeing how design was applied to bigger scales rather than just the standard sizes and by doing so seeing how my design would look like in environments was fun!

My work generally has improved a lot during these projects. Being able to make quick decisions made my life so much easier! I was able to develop my work and be happy!

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalzise on these?

Decision making has definitely been my strength throughout these briefs. Being able to make quick decisions has allowed me to develop my work further into other areas and see how my design could work when applied to different resources.

Doing this in the future will definitely improve my design skills.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

I think loosing my work day before deadline was my worst nightmare coming true! It really upset me and i know this has really put a downer on my work! I am definately NEVER going to use user work ever again!!!!

I feel i could have developed my nude design onto other sources which im quiet annoyed about as i really enjoyed that project! But i do think i fulfilled the brief which is fine.

I think developing two ideas would help in the future.

5. Identify four things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

SAVE SAVE SAVE MY WORK A MILLION TIMES AND NEVER EVER USE USER WORK!!!!!! ARRGGHHHH

APPLY MY DESIGN ONTO OTHER SOURCES EVEN IF THIS MEANS DOING IT ON PHOTOSHOP TO SEE HOW THINGS LOOK

MORE PAPER TESTING, I FOUND IT QUIET INTRIGUING HOW NICE OR HOW HORRIBLE DESIGN WOULD LOOK LIKE ON DIFFERENT PAPER STOCKS

DEFINITELY MAKE A TIMETABLE. THIS HAS MADE MINI DEADLINES FOR ME WHICH I HAD TO MAKE. I FELL THIS IS THE REASON WHY MY PROJECTS HAVE BEEN A SUCCESS AND WILL DEFINITELY CONTINUE DOING THIS IN THE FUTURE.

I finished my tshirts today! So happy with them!

Only little problem was i forgot to mask off a little bit off the edge of the design where there is a white line on the male t-shirt.

As i already had the design, i decided to print the type factory logo onto tissuepaper which would be used to wrap the t-shirt up when bought.

Today i did some screen printing for an my promotional stuff on an ongoing brief i am working on called the Type Factory.

Type Factory is a made up exhibiton space, and the brief is to promote the palce.

I printed four t-shirts, ones for staff and ones to be bought at the factory. And also seriettes which can be seen in the cafe areas of the factory. More pictures of the experience will be added soon!

Ishan Khosla is a artist, photographer and designer based in New Delhi, India. Initially educated in Computer Science, Ishan became obsessed with the visual world after he lost a part of his vision.

This was named as 'New York Stories'
I think this piece of design is very personal to Ishan Khosla, which makes it every special.

Identity for the recent Publisher's Round Table, sponsored by the Frankfurt Book Fair and the German Book Office. The paper stock and colour choice used in this corporate design works really well.

The front cover has been designed to show the short name for the school, 'DESI', also Khosla has arrange the type so it maps out the shape of India on the globe which is still readable! You can definately see indian influences in this contemporary piece of design.

The design of the logo and a series of promotional materials for the film Buddha. Khosla used a 'western' treatment for the logo.
His reasons were:
*that no English typeface can look like any Indian typefaces
*as this is a Hollywood film, it will be telling the story of Buddha in a "contemporary" way, rather than the traditional.

Designer Axel Peemoeller created some amazing, perspective-dependent type for the Eureka Tower Carpark in Melbourne, Australia. He apparently won several design awards for the three-dimensional directional system. "The distorted letters on the wall can be read perfectly when standing at the right position," Peemoeller writes.
